The iPod touch is turning out to be a whole lot more than just an MP3 player. With so many people using it as a web browser, gaming device, video player and more it’s no wonder that Apple recently gave it a speed and memory increase ahead of an all new iPod touch 3G that should be out next year.

As the iPod touch has so many uses, looking after it and keeping it protected is essential. There are a loads of cases available for it so I thought I’d put a quick guide together that shows off our most popular cases for the iPod touch 2G.

I’ve been a big fan of InvisibleShield for a while now and have had one fitted to my iPhone 3G since I got it on launch day last year. If you’ve never seen them before, they are a very thin, tough plastic coating that sticks to your phone. It covers both the front and back of your phone and is the best protection I’ve found if you don’t want the added bulk of a case. On the Zagg website, they attack the screen of a phone using a small drill/grinder – half of the screen was covered with an InvisibleShield the other half unprotected. Needless to say, the half that wasn’t covered was absolutely destroyed, the half that was covered was perfectly fine and not a hint of a scratch. InvisibleShields don’t use adhesive and can be removed easily if need, although you will need a little patience to fit it to your iPod touch. InvisibleShields won’t cushion your iPod if you drop it, but they do prevent scratches and fingerprints as well as add more grip to the otherwise slippery iPod touch.

"Great case, would be five except because of the hardest part, applying the static screen. No real instructions included. Of course, I messed up the first time and gave up, but read somewhere else to use scotch tape to clean the screen. So trying again, I got it. Don't try to make it perfect, so long as the screen inside the actual case is bubble and lint free. My problem in the first application was trying to make the screen perfect all the way from the top edge down to the bottom. On the second try, I got it just about perfect except tiny parts of the edges, which you can't really see through the case unless you look for it. Finally, there was one spot with a tiny piece of lint in the left corner where the screen is, but unless you look and twist it under a direct light, you won't see it, unless you keep looking for it. In a little while, I will clean and re-apply again."

Two new images of cases for the upcoming iPod Touch and iPod Nano have begun circulating. The new cases suggest that the next generation Touch and Nano will indeed include a camera.

The first image from Uxsight is listed as a "New iPod Touch 3G" with "hold for a camera in the back" and comes with the following image:

The second case design was posted on DealExtreme and shows an "iPod Nano 5" case with another hole in the back that is presumably again for the camera:

The reliability of these early case designs has been mixed in the past. While they have been accurate with the iPhone 3G design, they were also responsible for many of the iPhone Nano claims which never came true.

Still, the design of the iPod Nano's camera location is consistent with sketches provided by iLounge in May. iLounge also reported that the iPod Nano would be getting a camera with its next revision.

Don't Buy this iPod Case

Don't buy this Titanium beauty. It probably won't fit the 4G anyway but this titanium iPod case will protect your new iPod very well, given its made from the same materials as Formula One cars and satellites. So why don't I recommend it: it costs $820: 4 times what most iPods costs! And its ugly!

In fact its possible to argue that you don't really NEED a case for your nano at all. The iPod is pretty robust, it has a solid state drive and the odd scratch won't stop it working just fine. But other hand: with this exception, most cases cost well under $10 and buying on-line makes sense as they are so easy to ship. You have probably recognized the shape of stale iPod mini. Under the wooden covering there actually is a working player. To be honest when I saw it, it started to annoy me. At first I though someone decided it was a good idea make these things out of rubber sheet and dare to sell for double the price though it is not particularly a looker, tough or interesting in anyway. But then it totally made me change my mind.

There is one thing about the wooden iPod mini case that cancelled my bad opinion about it. It appeared to be an absolutely non commercial project of a man from Australia. This ipod case protects the device's screen and prevents unwanted scratches. This case is made for a 3rd generation ipod nano.

Materials
- Size #7 Knitting Needles
- 1 Skein Worsted Weight Yarn (I used chunky yarn)
- Crochet Hook or Sewing Needle
- Ruler or Tape Measure
- 2 Double-Pointed Needles
- Scissors

Gauge
Does not matter, but watch the size of the case to make sure that it isn't too big or too small.

Pattern
With size #7 needles, cast on 11 st.
Knit in garter st (Optional: stockinette st, rib st, moss st) until piece measures 3 1/2 inches.
Cast off.

Make a second piece the same as the first.

Optional:
With the double-pointed needles, make an icord.
Knit until desired length.

Finishing
With the crochet hook or sewing needle, sew together the two front and back pieces. Sew together the two longer sides and one shorter side. Leave the other short side open.

With Icord:
Take one end of the icord and tie it to the one end of the open side of the case. Take the other end of the icord and do the same to the other end of the open side. The ipod case should have a purse-like appearance.

I got my new iPod Touch for christmas 2009 and I love it, I take it with me everywhere, it never leaves my sight. Whether it be in the kitchen, on the plane or even at work.

You see I had an iPod 4G 20GB but after a week it was scratched to hell, I tried rubbing it with silver polish but it never quite looked the same so now I havemy new iPod Touch I thought it was high time I get a protective case for it. No more scratches for me. But the question came, which iPod Touch case should I get?

One made of gold with encrusted diamonds?

One made of leather?

A silicon skin one perhaps?

Or maybe even one made of hemp?

It was a tough decision and one that would have been a whole lot easier if I had a guide so I decided to write one.

As I wrote earlier, there are lots of choices for iPod Touch cases with the cost of them ranging equally wildly.

First we have the silicon based cases like the iSkin Touch which costs around £16. I like these ones because they are immensly durable, you can drop them, rub them against a brick wall or even use them to prop open the window.

Then we have the leather cases like the Belkin Leather Folio which costs around £12. This one in particular looks a bit like a purse when its closed up, not really my thing but I think they are pretty popular anyway. The advantage of these is that leather is pretty durable aswell, as you would expect from a case but its also organic, none of this plastic or silicon stuff. Good for the environment I think.

Finally we have the cases that dont look like cases, the ones that are just a thin but extremely durable layer of plastics, polymers and silicon. One of the more popular ones is the XtremeMac MicroShield which costs around £10.

All in all for around 10 quid you can save your iPod Touch from the usual wear and tear of every day life. For me I won't ever buy another iPod without also getting the case.

iPod Touch Resources

In my travels around the iPod Touch universe I have come across many sites which have been helpful. For instance when I was playing with my iPod Touch I wanted some more applications and I found this hub that showcased some of the better iPod Touch Applications.

When I was looking for my case I also came across Uxsight.com which provides a few iPod Touch cases like FM transmitters, docks and speakers.

And I think the single greatest thing about the iPod Touch apart from the web browsing is being able to watch full length DVDs on it. But the problem is getting them onto the iPod. I found a nice little 'How To' guide on ripping DVDs and putting them on your iPod which is well worth a look.

Recycling Your iPod

One last note, but this time its to point out that whilst buying new gadgets and accessories is great fun yoiu should also remember to recycle your old ones. For instance im sure as soon as the pink iphone appears in shops then all the girls will be out to get one but when that gets old they'll go after the next pink phone.

There is an easy way to recycle mobile phones and that is to sell them, this could be on an auction site like ebay, a marketplace like on amazon or even on special websites that give you money as soon as they receive the phone.

So next time you buy a gadget, remember to recycle the old one.

No, its not a classless boner joke...this time. From iWood comes these gorgeous little iPod coffins:

Made in Holland and available in maple, oak, cherry, padouk, and mahogany, there's a case available for virtually any iPod in existance, even your iPhone. (Not the Shuffle, though. Its the redhaired stepchild of the Apple family.) The case only adds 3mm to the overall width, leaving it slim and easy to pack.

iWood's website makes it a little tricky to find the prices (probably so you grow to love them to the point you'll pay any price they ask) but the iPod Nano cases start at about 85 Euros ($120 USD) while the iPod classic is 95 (about $135). The case comes as 2 separate sheets of aluminium ,they are shaped to allow your Touch to sit perfectly in. In each corner there are screws and threads ,it allow you to attach the other sheet to the lower side of the touch and be securely fastened together. Although it doesn’t appear to protect the screen, it certainly prevents damage to the touch should it be dropped on concrete.

The two downsides to this case are first, the size. with those extra corners added on, the Touch wont easily fit in your pocket any more. Finally, which seems a tad on the steep side to me. I think I’d rather risk just not having a case my self then paying a total of over $500 for both the case and iPod Touch.

How to find a non-OEM iPod Touch 2G Cases

You would think that it would be easy to get away from the classic black leather/faux leather OEM (original equipment manufacturer) iPod Touch 2G Cases, especially for smart iPod . Not true. I have spent the last two weeks looking for something unique for my ipod touch and still have not found what I am looking for.

Since my ipod nano is a specially painted in orange, blue and white from ipod homepage, I wanted something that would protect the device from my klutziness while showing off the great look of my ipod.

Every iPod Touch 2G Cases vendor has some form of OEM case usually in black leather. Sometimes it is a pouch for something like the ipod, or a form fitting little number for flip ipod.

Rarely do Verizon, AT&T, etc. offer something really attractive or even all that protective. The silicone/rubber ones that I saw in the AT&T store, BestBuy and Radio Shack just did not look as if they would provide more than a little color change.

Bestbuy and Radio Shack aren’t any better. Representatives from both stores sent me to a kiosk in my local mall that specialized in ipod touch accessories. I found a nice protective clear plastic case at the kiosk. It fits my ipod well. Since I have already dropped it twice without damaging the ipod, it also works well.

Sure, you can settle for the OEM choices from your ipod store or you can try out the larger but still limited selection from your multi-brand ipod kiosk. The most variety and style in ipod touch cases can be found online.

I can get a special OEM ipod pouch in a variety of colors (black and red) from my local stores or choose from an additional two color choices (white and tan) from such online stores.

Online stores such as Sourcingmap, offer a wider variety of cases as well as the usual assortment of black leather and silicone. Most of the cases are functional and attractive and in the affordable price range of $1.99-$4.99

Sourcingmap offers a wide variety of stylish ipod cases. This store has a different case or pouch to fit your mood from elegant evening wear to rugged outdoor style and good looking everyday cases as well.

Of course, you will pay a much higher price for these cases than for the cases found in an online store such as the ones mentioned above or any mall kiosk or OEM store. For instance, Noreve offers a $14,990 case for the 3G iPhone that comes with a diamond pattern.

Over the years, I have purchased a number of cases from online accessory providers and found them to be of varying quality. I have found that my favorite inexpensive cases are from Krusell, PDair and Covertec. They are all good quality cases and hold up well. You can find these cases on many of the gadget specific .

I have also paid big bucks for fancy cases from Sena, Fortte and Piel Frama. All of them were excellent quality and held up longer than the gadget/ipod for which I originally bought the cases.

This time around I want to try something a little more daring and a little less corporate professional. I think I just might spring for a Pica or more far out Krusell case for my ipod touch. Maybe I’ll choose something from the Fortte Life Colors line. After all, with a unique phone, an OEM case just won’t do!

There are rumors that keep coming back, like the iPod Touch 2G . Eventually they may become reality, but seriously, is this product information form the real thing or a way to get a mailing list?

Their "iPod Touch 2G cases" page has a form which says "sign up for the upcoming release of our iPod Touch cases" but I'm just not buying it, sorry.

I know that XSKN claims to have one coming and I know they leaked the iPod Cases before, but I can't believe Apple will happily give a completely new product away like this.

An update to an old one—like the iPod Nano Cases—yes. But a completely new one? It never happened, and it has the same chances of happening as a remake of the Star Wars prequels by Woody Allen. Or the iPhone Pro, for that matter.

The Promise

Multiple gadgets offer competing ways to bring music along while you swim, snorkel or shower. Pick your poison: Either a waterproof MP3 player, or a regular MP3 player shielded with a waterproof case and paired with underwater headphones.

In Practice

We tested both the MP3 player and the waterproof iPod touch case as part of our regular lap-swimming exercise routine. Both work pretty well. We’ve always been skeptical about swimming with music—the sound of splashing water as you flail your arms makes it hard to hear anything at all, never mind lyrics and subtle melodies. But swimming to music was, for the most part, a pleasure—there’s something great about mentally singing along instead of counting laps.
The one potential problem has nothing to do with the players themselves, but rather with the headphones—unless they create a perfect seal for your ears, you’re in for some trouble. This is particularly problematic if, like us, earbuds never quite fit you. As water leaked in, we had to adjust the headphones frequently. When this happened, the volume was never steady, and we could sometimes only hear in one ear. This was a problem for both the waterproof case and the waterproof MP3 player. One more thing: Stick to music. At the end of our tests, we became ambitious and tried listening to an audiobook while swimming—has anyone else ever swum to an audio version of Henry James’s Washington Square? While not completely impossible, it was stressful, and attempting to discern the words really made clear the limits of using headphones in a swimming pool.
Freestyle Audio Soundwave MP3 player: The Soundwave seems more like one of the 64 MB MP3 players from six years ago than today’s tiny, elegant iPod Shuffles and Zen Stones. Though it has 2 GB of memory, it’s not aesthetically pleasing and is very slow. It’s slow to charge, slow to turn on and off, even slow to adjust volume or switch between tracks. It’s almost as if you’re pushing buttons through a very thick protective layer (which, in effect, you are). So this is not an MP3 player that we’d recommend for landlubbers.
But in the pool, it worked well. It was comfortable, reliable and easy to load with music. And though it takes far longer to charge than your typical iPod Touch 2G, it did retain its charge well over a number of weeks. The headphones that came with the player stayed in our ears better than the ones that we had to use with the H2OAudio case (see below).
H20Audio Case: H2OAudio makes several underwater cases—we tested the medium-size case with a 3rd generation iPod Nano, though it would work with any similar player. The advantage of such cases is that you can use your pre-existing, preloaded everyday MP3 player without purchasing a special one for the pool.
But the advantages end there. Putting on this armband—even for a little iPod Nano—is like going to the doctor to get your blood pressure taken and then keeping that cuff on for an hour. Though we wouldn’t go so far as to say that it slowed us down, it wasn’t comfortable. The manufacturer makes a belt attachment for its armbands, but it looks cumbersome as well, and costs an additional $30.
The other major disadvantage of the H2OAudio case is that it basically requires that you use the company’s $60 waterproof headphones—no other earbuds we tried, whether waterproof or land-bound, would work with the seal on the case. We preferred Freestyle Audio’s $15 waterproof headphones (included with the MP3 player) to the H2OAudio’s set. It wasn’t a sound-quality issue—they just stayed in our ears better. Finally, you can spend $120 to make your iPod Touch 2G waterproof, but we still felt like we were putting our precious Nano at risk. We were always double- and triple-checking to make sure that the case was closed all the way. Next to a dedicated underwater audio player, this stress just seemed like an added inconvenience.

Some things are good clear. Water, windows. Some things not so much. Wonder Woman’s plane comes to mind as well as this clear iPod touch 2G case. We don’t have a problem with clear cases, but the guts inside have to look cool, otherwise what’s the point?
